“My internship at ASE Optics has increased my interest in optical design.”

My name is Lorenzo Calvano and I have a degree in Physics from Harvey Mudd College in California. I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in the joint Erasmus Mundus “Europhotonics” program at Aix-Marseille University and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).

Between my various research projects in magnetic materials, quantum cryptography and photonic materials – and now here at ASE Optics – I have learned how vital optical devices are to so many different industries and areas of academic research. For all these reasons, my main interest is in optical design to meet this growing need.

Why did you choose ASE Optics Europe for your internship?

It was the perfect place. This internship allowed me to gain experience in the different stages that make up the development of an optical design, alongside a team of optical and mechanical engineers with a long experience developing a wide variety of complex optical systems for different projects and applications.

What is your role at ASE Optics Europe?

During my internship at ASE Optics I have worked on several projects where I have designed and built optical assemblies and written code to accurately evaluate their performance.

How would you define your experience at ASE Optics Europe?

My experience has been wonderful. I am getting what I was looking for when I chose to do my internship here. I have had the support of all the people on the team, who are very talented and kind. This experience at ASE Optics has only increased my interest in optical design.
