Enriching expericence at 14th International Symposium on Fusion Nuclear Energy

On 24th September I had the pleasure to attend and participate in 14th International Symposium on Fusion Nuclear Energy, presenting the poster “Measurements of the angle-dependent reflectivity of plasma-facing components and assessment of the impact on the estimations of coverage of the IVVS measurements of the ITER VV.”
We presented our recent efforts to enhance the detection sensitivity of the measurement system of the IVVS and to improve the assessment of the its coverage of the plasma-facing components at ITER. Over the past few months we have worked on designing and manufacturing an instrument to characterize the reflectivity of tungsten and beryllium samples, and we have used the results as inputs in an IVVS simulator that assesses the returned power from the different targets depending on their angle and distance to the measurement probe.
A wide range of interesting topics in science and technology was covered by ISFNT-14, with representatives of key organisations describing the status of the ITER and DEMO projects, as well as a progress roadmap for the coming decades. Participants repeatedly highlighted the importance of cooperation between academia and industry, and the criticality of improving the confidence level for engineering data and of learning from the challenges and opportunities of the past 40 years of development.
It was a very interesting and enriching experience, as we could contact with different companies and entities involved in projects related to Fusion Nuclear Energy.
