Design and development of SWIR objectives

Recently, advances in Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) detectors, with higher resolution focal plane arrays, have appeared in the market. This makes the SWIR regime an increasingly key element for long-range surveillance systems and devices.

In ASE Optics Europe we have experience in the design and development of custom SWIR Spotters for surveillance and detection applications.

Advantages of SWIR objectives

SWIR offers many advantages over the traditional visible spectrum (0.4-0.7µm). SWIR spectral range allows the user to detect lasers operating at 1060nm and 1500nm and it is also the most suitable range for seeing through smoke and seeing camouflaged targets. For all these reasons, there is great interest in the design of small and lightweight SWIR cameras to integrate them into UAVs, drones and, also, for its use as a handheld camera or as a security system.

Challenges in the optical design of SWIR objectives and Spotters

Many of the security and defense applications of SWIR cameras include handheld and/or airborne systems, with long-range detection requirements and volume and weight restrictions are also important.

On the other hand, since sensor technologies are constantly evolving, the optics for these sensors often need to be compact, achieve minimal dimensions, to meet user requirements. In ASE Optics Europe, we design and assemble SWIR objective lenses and spotter with reduced weight and volume, while achieving the highest optical quality:
